Hey! I Won’t Break Your Heart
Ethereal and tactile sets bring a dreamlike circus world to life for Corinne Bailey Rae
A make-believe world of mirrored rooms...
A juggler, a ballerina and a hoop dancer perform alongside Corinne on a circus-inspired, small-scale theatre set, where the art direction invites the viewer to see ‘backstage’ into a make-believe world of mirrored rooms, trapeze hoops and dancing skeletons. It’s as though a performance is about to take place, or has just ended, with dimly lit bulbs and a life-size spinning knife thrower’s wheel. The world Corinne finds herself in is surreal, ethereal and tactile and filled with intricate, beautiful costumes and a dreamlike colour palette.

Lord Whitney worked with acclaimed director, James Frost and visited the wonderful, playful world of circus in this promo for Corinne Bailey Rae’s song, ‘Hey! I won’t break your heart’. It was Inspired by the traditional circus shows of the 1920s and 30s, but brought up to date with art direction that gives it a contemporary yet timeless feel.
Nowadays, I feel like most of the time we are problem solving, trying to retain as much production value as possible. With Lord Whitney and their incredible crew, it didn’t feel like that at all. In fact, it was quite the opposite. They brought a hands-on approach that was contagious, along with a real eye for detail that made the sets look stunning and a few good laughs along the way. An all round treat for a director”
